"To change your life, you need to change your priorities.” -- Mark Twain
Chasing a never-ending To-Do list of 100 things deemed to be important is no way to spend our days, nor is it fun. It is proven that having more than three key priorities in the day means less real productivity that moves you forward on your biggest goals.
“When you have too many top priorities, you effectively have no top priorities.” --Stephen Covey
Why is setting priorities so important in our lives?
A priority simply means that something is very important, and must be dealt with before other things. As Stephen Covey says, “We must put first things, first”.
If we don’t start with the most important things when we start our day, then most definitely, it is guaranteed that we will never get to the most important things, as the day goes on, our energy, willpower, and motivation get less. That’s why it’s so important to set priorities and schedule our day with our topmost priorities in mind.
1. Brings our focus on where we want to spend most of our time, energy, and resources.
“There is no one busy in this world, it’s always about priorities. You will always find time for the things you feel important.” -- Nishan Panwar
When we set priorities, we communicate to ourselves, to our minds, our bodies, our hearts and emotions, and to the world that this is important to us, and has the highest value.
Once, we shine that spotlight onto our priorities, then, automatically our entire being, heart, mind, and soul start making the time to start walking towards that light with better focus, attention, and awareness. This helps us to gain daily momentum, and make progress on what we love, and what is most important to us.
2. Helps to eliminate the unnecessary.
“The ability to simplify means to eliminate the unnecessary so that the necessary may speak” -- Hans Hofmann
Once we start walking towards the light of our priorities, the unnecessary and unimportant often fall to the edges and into the darkness. We can then discern between what we value and what we don’t and we can easily say ‘NO’ to what we don’t consider important.
3. Helps to deliver better results and greater freedom.
Once we start our day with our priorities, we can make small, steady progress in the right direction that we have chosen, whatever direction that may be towards our ultimate destination. Immediately, we will start to gain momentum, and like a snowball rolling off a mountain, our efforts will start moving forward, and we will start seeing results.
4. Helps us to become better leaders in our own lives, families, communities, and companies.
Setting our top priorities helps us to create a bigger vision for our lives, our future selves, and where we want to go. Our vision allows us to then direct our lives and our efforts. This has a great impact on other areas of our lives, and other people in our lives, too.
Setting a vision for ourselves, or creating a shared vision with our families and our employees, creates more harmony and unity towards one goal. When people are united and working towards a clear, shared vision, amazing things start to happen.
Now that we know why setting priorities is important, tomorrow, we hope to learn about how to identify, set, and schedule your key priorities.
