How did Edmund Hillary climb to the top of Mt. Everest?
How did NASA put a man on the moon?
Often the simplest answer is “One tiny step at a time.”
Giant leaps most often don’t happen with giant steps.
They happen with tiny, often minute steps of taking daily action and making daily progress.
We don’t all wake up and become super-achievers and Olympians in a day or an instant. Nobody does. Although it may seem like it when we watch the final feat of bravery, courage, or talent.
However, we have to remember that we are only seeing the end product; the final show.
But, if you ask them, they will often reveal it all starts with one small, even tiny step.
1. Small, slow, and steady wins the race.
We all the story about the hare and turtle. The turtle's too small daily steps went slow and steady, and because he was consistent, he finished the race. Often, we may find ourselves having a big, burst of energy when we are inspired to start a project, only to find that that motivation, energy, and enthusiasm have left us the next day, and we are unable to stay consistent.
2. Tiny is Transformational.
However, the biggest game-changer is that when you decide to go tiny, you don’t have to rely on motivation and energy to keep the habit or action going. It is so small, easy, and simple that we can do it on our worst days too. This is how habits actually get built and easily sustained.
- Committing to only flossing one tooth is so much easier to start and sustain.
- Committing to reading only 1 word a day is so much easier to start and sustain.
- Committing to eating only 1 bite of fruit at breakfast is so much easier to start, and sustain.
Of course, some days we may read more, but that would be just extra credit. All we have to do is floss 1 tooth, read 1 word, and eat 1 bite, and we can admit that we can 1 word even on their foggiest, rainiest and cloudiest days.
